Because many serious diseases are so highly correlated with being overweight or obese, it’s not surprising that the rate of diabetes among people with DD (12% - 13%) is significantly higher than the diabetes rate for individuals in the general population (8%). The increased incidence of diabetes is partially due to poor eating habits and a relatively sedentary life style. Moreover, certain medications often prescribed to people with developmental disabilities (such as anti-seizure or second-generation antipsychotics) cause side effects such as increased appetite and weight gain. These often exacerbate the possibility of developing or triggering diabetes.

Fiore™ provides proven interventions to help people control their nutritional consumption, improving the chance of effectively managing food and caloric intake and reducing their BMIs. When individuals lose weight, not only does the possibility of developing disease decline, but it often means that diabetics reduce the amount of their medication. Prescription medications are typically related to an individual’s weight. We note that with Fiore, some DD customers have reduced their weight so much and have gained significant control over their diet, that they only require minimal diabetes medication or are no longer classified as pre-diabetic.

Similarly, high blood pressure (hypertension) and other heart-related problems have been reduced with the increased knowledge and effective nutritional and food management provided by Fiore.
